When FDA Regulations require washing your manufacturing equipment daily, you need to make sure that the computers on the plant floor are rugged enough to withstand the elements. Our customer, a California-based company that provides the fruit that sweetens some of the country’s most recognizable brands of yogurts, should be needed to systematically replace the computers that run the SAP program on the production line and account for what totes are filled. Operators opened the doors frequently to access their computers and then closed them to protect the units when not in use. The wear and tear on gaskets and locks resulted in water vapors entering some enclosures and damaging the PCs.
Turtle & Hughes branch in Long Beach, CA, partnered with iTech Company to specify new computers. iTech is based in California and is a worldwide manufacturer of industrial, networking, Marine/Military/Medical grade LCD and panel PC products and has a large U.S. production factory.
The iTech computer fits into a smaller, compact, waterproof enclosure. The entire unit (including the keyboard) is washable and meets all the customer’s requirements for usability, including: Intel processor, hard drive, Windows 7 Pro, USB and multiple ports.
In the end, what sold the customer was a tough shock resistant screen and the lower price tag, which is 50 percent less than an overseas alternative they were considering.
