When it comes to grid connected solar power systems, Hawaii leads every state in the union with an aggressive clean energy goal of 100 percent renewable by 2045. Already, the state has 674MW of installed distributed solar capacity from rooftop solar array and utility-scale renewable energy projects that feed power to the grid. With an abundant supply of sun, solar power was a logical choice. Imported energy costs that are four times higher than the mainland -- the state is highly motivated to reach its goal. The challenge for many is finding the right hardened network equipment that will perform well in the extreme tropical climate.
ALOHA TO RENEWABLE ENERGY
When a large solar panel farm in Hawaii needed help in designing, testing and kitting a Network Communications solution, M&W Group along with Lavan Controls partnered with Turtle & Hughes -Data Communications department, for optimal industrial ethernet switches from Extreme Networks.
The design included a rugged IP30 enclosure, dual power input and reserve protection with full wire speed switching. These Extreme Network Ethernet switches are temperature hardened up to 167 degrees Fahrenheit. Smart switches provide the uptime management features for intelligent operational efficiency. The power over Ethernet switches are installed on a din rail mount, which is optimal for installation in the solar farm.
By choosing a GUI (graphical user interface) management interface, the client is aware of customer connectivity and traffic management, and can create application priorities with Quality of Service capabilities for filtering and throttling. The addition of a fast failover feature provides redundancy with the capability for dual homing network design.
