HISTORY

HISTORY IS NOT A SERIES OF NAMES AND DATES. IT'S A SERIES OF CHOICES.

At Turtle & Hughes, every choice we make is informed by integrity, intelligence and a commitment to service, a precedent set by our founders, M. Berry Turtle and Bill Hughes. It explains why our history spans 95 years and has led to our standing as one of the nation’s largest independent electrical and industrial distributors

As a fourth-generation family-owned business, we uphold our legacy by expanding it. Since 1975, employees have shared ownership in our company, enriching their sense of dedication. Three generations of leadership by women have brought welcome diversity to our industry. For over 25 years, we have been a Certified Women's Business Enterprise (WBE).

Our history has also taught us that the key to building a business that lasts is building relationships that last. As we expand our presence through acquisition and partnerships, and utilize all the convenience and efficiency of technology, we know that building trust is a day-to-day personal endeavor just as it was when our founders sold their wares on the streets of Lower Manhattan.

By making the right choices, we can find the right solutions. That’s how we built our past. That’s how we’ll build our future.

TAKING ACTION

OUR HERITAGE

From our beginning over 90 years ago, nothing has been more representative of our organization than the enduring turtle and its connection to our founder, M. Berry Turtle. Today, our mascot, Relay, is a reminder of our long history and a promise of a bright future.

1923

BREAKING GROUND

Colleagues Marion Berry (M.B.) Turtle and William (Bill) Hughes join forces to open Turtle & Hughes in Lower Manhattan; an electrical equipment distributor to local businesses.

1976

A NEW ERA

Supported by a bright new sales team -- attracted by an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) created a few years earlier -- the headquarters relocates to a larger facility in Linden, NJ, where it remains today.

2018

CELEBRATING 95 YEARS

Growing to over 900 employee-owners in locations across the U.S. and in Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico, we are inspired by our past but continuously look to the future for ways to create value for our customers.

MRO MANAGED SERVICES

SUCCESS STORY

OLD MACHINE, NEW SAVINGS

Our customer needed to replace a machine that was critical to the production of contact lenses. Turtle & Hughes Integrated Supply (THIS) was able to identify and supply an older machine that could be reconditioned, yet still meet the industry’s strict criteria, saving our customer the $53,000 that would have been necessary to replace the original machine.

INDUSTRIAL

SUCCESS STORY

SEAL OF APPROVAL

An aerospace customer needed to improve the masking process that protects the surface finish of a product component. The standard process was a time-consuming manual function, resulting in inconsistencies. Working with 3M, Turtle & Hughes developed a template for a durable film that provided a consistent and durable protective surface, as well as reduced application time and cost, resulting in $39,500 in annual customer savings.

LIGHTING APPLICATIONS

SUCCESS STORY

SHEDDING LIGHT ON CANCER RESEARCH

When a new 21-story research center was being constructed in New York City, Turtle & Hughes Lighting department put together one of its most complex packages ever. This included custom-designed lab bench lighting fixtures that work in conjunction with a daylight harvesting system and a shade control system. The system prevents light pollution at night, creating a controlled environment to conduct research so scientists could achieve a better understanding of the disease and how to manage it.
