SHEDDING LIGHT ON CANCER RESEARCH
When a new 21-story research center was being constructed in New York City, Turtle & Hughes Lighting department put together one of its most complex packages ever. This included custom-designed lab bench lighting fixtures that work in conjunction with a daylight harvesting system and a shade control system. The system prevents light pollution at night, creating a controlled environment to conduct research so scientists could achieve a better understanding of the disease and how to manage it.
Hudson Yards is the largest development in New York City in almost 100 years; a self-contained neighborhood with residential, office and commercial buildings, shops, restaurants, a creative hub, parks, playgrounds and a school. Two cogeneration plants — with switchgear from Turtle & Hughes — form a smart microgrid, which is designed to keep the complex running, even in the event a power outage.
When it opened in 2013, the Catskill-Delaware Ultraviolet Disinfection facility became the world’s largest UV water treatment facility, covering two billion gallons of drinking water and adding a layer of protection for more than nine million New York residents. Turtle & Hughes consulted on the project prior to construction, provided project management and equipment during the construction, and continues to offer technical support today.
